WHO WILL SWITCH ON THE BLACKPOOL ILLUMINATIONS IN 2011?

2011 dates 2nd September - 6th November 2011

 One of the highlights of an trip to Blackpool in the Autumn is the amazing spectacle along Blakpool’s seafront that is The Blackpool Illuminations.

At over 10 kilometres long, with more than one million bulbs it takes 22 weeks to decorate Blackpool’s street lights and promenades and 9 weeks to take it all down again!
2010 saw the new Tower Headland opened to the public, which has been under development for the last couple of years. The 2010 Illuminations were unique as it will be the first year the public will see the illuminations switched on, before the headland was built only Blackpool Tower could be seen from the switch-on ceremony.
The opening night of the celebrations is always on a Friday and a free concert is held on a first come first served basis. All Blackpool hotels become quite busy in the first weekend, with visitors from far and wide venturing to see the spectacular sites.
The first year of the illuminations was 1879 and consisted of just 8 arc lamps referred to as “artificial sunshine”, a far cry from the 200 miles of cabling, lights and wiring that adorn the streets of Blackpool today!
